Extended FAQ:: "margin:0 0 0 0;">Some more Troubleshooting
Q: My channel tuning does not work! it simply does not tune, drops me to the desktop, and/or forgets my country setting what is going on?
A: DirectX 9.0b has a bug with tuner settings with non-NTSC sources, so please install the
hotfix.
Q: Recorded files do not have Closed Caption data, is there anything I need to setup?
A: Currently there is nothing to be done, this is an known issue.
Q: I have sound but no video, or only when I enable timeshifting do I loose the video, what can I do?
A: Depending on the video card you are using it my be helpful to check "Use VMR when available" or uncheck this if it is already selected.
For time shifting also make sure you have a tested decoder, When using a card that does not have MPEG2 hardware encoding a software encoder like InterVideo encoder is also needed.
Q: I have video but no sound and/or mute does not work, what settings do I need to change?
A: For Tvoon when you are using the tuner input (coax cable), the sound is pulled from the coax, not line-in. So if you are using the tuner as the input you need to go to "Settings" and choose the "Audio" tab then select "Tuner Audio In".
If your setup is having problems muting also in the "Audio" tab try checking "Use Sound card Hardware for Mute." This is needed for many setups, most commonly ATI All-in-Wonder cards.
Q: Recording and/or Live TV gives me audio but only black video.
A: Please make sure you have the latest drivers for your card. For the PVR-250/350 please see
SHSPVR, this contains a few different driver sets including some that are known to work with Windows Media Center Edition so try some of the different versions. For BT8x8 based cards you can try the open source generic BT8x8 driver called
BTWinCap or some ACPI compliance bug-fixed Conexant reference BT8x8 drivers found
here.
Q: What are the Capture and Preview Pins? what about Smart-Tee?
Capture devices have two "pins" that a program can hook into for use. One is called "Capture" and is the hook for a TV program to record. The other is called "Preview" which is a separate hook to see what the TV card is receiving. The Preview pin could be set to a different resolution than the Capture pin so that way say if your system could not handle recording at 640x480 you could still view the TV input at 640x480 while the recording took place at a lower-resolution.
This is not the best idea in practice as it leads to issues with recording and synchronizing. This is why "Use Capture pin for Preview" is now the default, in this way the Live TV image you see is directly from the capture pin and not from the preview pin. It must be checked for advanced features and recording types such as MPEG2 to work on software encoding cards.
Smart-tee is a special option, because some capture cards can not capture and preview above 320x288(PAL) or 320x240(NTSC), the Smart Tee can tap into the video stream and preview using the actual video capture stream. However this is a cheat of sorts and MPEG2 and WMV recording support can't work with it set in the TV Plugin.
Also note that the above definitions are for software cards, hardware MPEG2 encoding cards (ie: Hauppauge PVR-250/350, Yuan MPG600, etc.) are totally different and these settings do not apply.
What is "DxVA" and what does it do?
A: DxVA stands for Direct X Video Acceleration. DxVA is a standardized group of MPEG2 decoding video routines that are to be in a modern graphics processor's video engine. This allows modern video cards to accelerate the most CPU intensive parts of the MPEG2 decoding process, leaving the lesser parts of the decoding pipeline to the CPU. This can also simply be called Hardware Acceleration. For HDTV use DxVA acceleration becomes critical as pure software decoding of HDTV streams requires a 3Ghz processor while only a ~2Ghz processor is needed with a DxVA compliant video card. Video cards that are DxVA compliant include the ATI Radeon family, the GeForce 4 MX and GeForce FX family.
Q: What is "VMR" and why is it usefull? VMR makes things worse why is that?
A: VMR - Video Mixing Renderer - comes in two major "flavors" VMR7 and VMR9. VMR7 was an initial trial, so to speak, of newer advanced video mixing abilities using the 3D pipeline and the DirectX Video Acceleration API, it was only available in Windows XP. VMR9 is a newer, some what different, and improved VMR that comes with DirectX 9 therefore it can work on any system that can install DirectX 9, but VMR9 has more strenuous hardware requirements than VMR7 (VMR7, as you can guess, is VMR using DirectX 7/8 level technology.) For VMR7 You need a DirectX 8.1 compliant card to utilize VMR7's deinterlacing and filtering. For VMR9 you need DX9 installed and recent DX9 compliant drivers for your video card installed. A fully DirectX 9 compliant video card (GeForce FX family or Radeon 9500+) is recommended so that all VMR9 features (specifically, the newer DX9 deinterlacing and filtering) can be utilized; for basic VMR9 support DirectX 8.1 level cards will do fine and some DX7 level cards may work providing they meet some
requirements.
Since VMR9 actually uses the 3D pipeline in a graphics processor many more filtering and advanced source/stream mixing possibilities exist. This is considered the next way to display advanced video data by Microsoft, it is intended to supersede the old 2D "mapped memory" style "overlay".
VMR in general should not make things worse, if it it does, the first thing to do is to update your graphics card drivers, this has been known to help greatly; please note that older generation cards may not be fully compatible with VMR9.
Hauppauge PVR specific issues
Q: I have wired audio/video issues with my WinTV PVR-250/350 after using the WinTV 2000 program and then Tvoon, what can I do to fix this? or are their recommended settings for the PVR250/350?
A: WinTV 2000 resets the settings as defined in WinTV 2000.
In order to use Tvoon after that, this what you need to do in Tvoon:
1. Go to Input and select a different input than you are using and then select the correct input.
2. Go to Property Sheets->Capture, under Video Params select 'Constant Bitrate' and maybe 6MBps, under Audio Params select 192 khz for audio.
And I would try not to use WinTV after that, who needs it when you have Tvoon?
Q: When using a WinTV PVR-250/350 card the capture property sheet is grayed out, what do I do?
A: You are using incompatible drivers. Try a newer or different set from
SHSPVR. This site contains different driver sets including some that are known to work with Windows Media Center Edition, so try some of the different versions.
Timeshitfting
Q: How do I get timeshifting and/or software MPEG2 to work?
A: For Hauppauge PVR-250/350 (and other hardware MPEG2 encoding cards) users it is simply a matter of having the prerequisite of Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (as Tvoon uses the Stream Buffer Engine originally created for Windows XP Media Center Edition). For others the MPEG2/timeshifting function has to be done in software so an appropriate MPEG2 encoder/decoder package is also needed, currently this is the "InterVideo Video Encoder" filter set which is utilized in InterVideo WinDVR. Additionally, an MPEG2 decoder is required to see the video stream for hardware MPEG2 encoding users: this is very common as any DVD software includes a decoder; verified decoders include: "Default" decoder from Hauppauge, nvDVD, Ulead, Intervideo (WinDVD), Elecard, and Sonic Cinemaster (TheaterTek) decoders.
To make the Intervideo filters available to other applications:
Go to the Start Menu and choose "Run" then copy and paste (assuming the default install folder for WinDVR3):
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\InterVideo\WinDVR3\iviaenc.ax"
Click OK and then repeat with these commands...
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\InterVideo\WinDVR3\IVIVENC.ax"
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\InterVideo\WinDVR3\ivimux.ax"
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\InterVideo\WinDVR3\ivivideo.ax"
There should a little popup that says the file was registered after you hit OK. This should now register both the audio and video filters for MPEG2 encoding.
Q: Timeshifting produces quite a lag when changing channels what is that all about?
A: Timeshifting is quite a strain on a system that is doing the encoding in software. Tvoon must stop buffering the current channel and then start buffering the new channel, this clearing of the buffer and restarting plus decoding the new MPEG2 stream is quite processor intensive hence 3-5 seconds of lag is quite normal.
Q: When timeshifting I hit record, it does not record what I think it should, it is offset from what I was viewing, is this normal?
A: This is a known issue with most digital video recording software, when you are watching a program that is "timeshifted" by 30 seconds and hit "record" for a duration of 10 seconds, the video file created features material that you won't see for another 20 seconds. In other words hitting "record", no matter what mode of the plugin you are currently in, will record Live TV not the buffered timeshifting TV.
Q: How do I change the size of the timeshifting buffer? I want to be able pause for longer and/or rewind live TV farther back in time.
A: In Tvoon this can be adjusted in the "Recording" tab of the "Settings" window. It is found in the "Timeshitfting" section called "Backup Size", by default it is set for 20 minutes.
: What cards does Tvoon support?
Verified cards in software encoding mode include: Most Conexant CX2388x based cards (ASUS TV880, MSI TV@anywhere Master, newer Hauppauge WinTV, Leadtek TV2000XP Deluxe, and many more), Just about any BT8x8 based cards (ie: Zoltrix Genie TV, Pinnacle PCTV Studio Pro, older Hauppauge WinTV cards, ATI TV Wonder/VE,et. al.), Philips SAA713x based cards (Compro VideoMate TV Gold Plus, LifeView FlyVideo 2000/3000), and the well known ATI All-in-Wonder family of cards.
Q: What operating systems does Tvoon support?
A: It was made for Windows XP.
